Invitation to the protest to call for the immediate release of all political prisoners in Burma

Dear respectable friends,

We, 88 New Generation Students (UK) , would like to kindly invite you all, to support and participate in the protest calling on the Military Backed Thein Sein government to immediate release of all political prisoners in Burma.

It comes no surprise that the Thein Sein regime in Burma still holds an estimated 1,500 political prisoners while more than 500 political prisoners are remained incarcerated in prisons. Recently, following the ASEAN summit in Bali, Thein Sein boldy defied that his government “did not agree with” the commonly-held belief that around 1,500 people, serving jail terms in Burma because of their political belief. This shows the violation of the fundamental, civil, political and human rights of political prisoners who have committed in the struggel for freedom of our country however hardship they are facing with the Thein Sein regime.

Although the new government claims that they are working towards more political freedom in our country, this is far from the truth, as all prominent political figures including Buddhist monks leader Sayadaw Gambira ,88 Generation Students Leader Ko Min Ko Naing, female dissident Ma Nilar Thein have ended up being sent to far more remote prisons in Burma. It is absolutely disheartening (and expected) to see that all these prominent icons were not affected by the recent decision to reduce prison terms, ordered by the ruthless Thein Sein government. This order cannot be called an amnesty. This indicates that the Thein Sein government has no intention to free the prisoners of conscience in Burma by any cost.

Therefore, we, the youth generation, believe that the current crisis in Burma will not be solved by the fake tactics of the military dominated government.

Since the denial of political status is the denial of dignity, we would respectfully like to ask all organizations and individuals who are working for the freedom of all political prisoners and our country to show the solidarity.

We are going to call on the Thein Sein government:

(1) To officially acknowledge the existence of political prisoners in Burma
(2) To verify the number of political prisoners and make their list publicly available
(3) To release, immediately and unconditionally, all political prisoners in Burma
