NLD Registration Approved; Campaign to Start Soon

By THE IRRAWADDY Thursday, January 5, 2012

RANGOON — Burma's main opposition party, the National League for Democracy (NLD), is set to reopen its offices and begin its campaign for upcoming by-elections after the government approved its registration on Thursday, according to party sources.

The party's leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, traveled to the Burmese capital Naypyidaw on Dec. 23 to register her party to contest in the by-elections, which are scheduled to be held on April 1.

Nyan Win, the main spokesperson for the NLD, told The Irrawaddy on Thursday that the party's registration was approved today by the Union Election Commission. The party will start reopening it offices next Monday and begin accepting party members, he said.

“The Election Commission in Rangoon met us today. They told us about the approval of our party registration. The registration No is 47/2012. They allowed all our party logo and flag we proposed,” said Nyan Win.

The list of candidates for NLD will be submitted by Jan. 11 to the NLD central executive committee (NLD’s CEC) and the NLD’s CEC will decide which candidates will compete and the constituency each will contest. The candidates will be selected depending on their ability with women, youth members and different ethnicities being included.

Suu Kyi planned to contest in Kawmoo constituency in outskirt of Rangoon Division and election campaigns will be started after Jan. 16, according to NLD sources. The NLD planned to contest in 48 constituencies in the upcoming by-election.

NLD won a landslide victory in general election in 1990, however, the ex-military regime denied to transfer power to the party. It skipped the controversial general election in 2010 as it said the election was not free and fair.
